Lafayette's budget picture is grim
(2009-09-03)
(wbaa) - The city of Lafayette is taking a conservative approach to this year's budget process.

The 2010 spending plan totals about $52 million, which is about $500,000 less than the current year.

City officials will not approve any raises, fill vacant positions or purchase big ticket items such as garbage trucks because the money is not there.

Mayor Tony Roswarski says another issue is the delay in property tax bills.

He says it's likely the city will have to borrow money again this year, but officials will know for sure in November.

Roswarski says rising health care costs are a concern while crafting the budget. The city is currently negotiating with the company.
