Indiana's Schools down on Adequate Yearly Progress
(2009-04-16)
(wbaa) - Fewer Indiana schools are meeting a higher standard for adequate yearly progress, compared to 54 percent a year ago.

The results from last fall's I-STEP were announced Wednesday.

While West Lafayette's three schools did, only four of the Tippecanoe School Corporation's 17 schools achieved AYP and only Oakland Elementary in the Lafayette School Corporation met it.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett calls the results unacceptable.

He says his staff will be bold as it explores all options to help the state improve its academic progress and compete in a global society.

The state Department of Education could reduce funding to schools, replace staff, appoint a trustee to take control of a district and abolish or restructure an entire corporation.

A spokesperson for the state's teacher union says all of those options are counter-productive.

Teachers say what's needed is improving programs for special education and English learning, as well as addressing poverty issues.
