Wabash National streamlining plan moving forward
(2008-07-24)
LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
A Lafayette trailer manufacturer will cut about 150-jobs as part of a streamlining effort. Wabash National executives announced the efficiency plans earlier this year.
Now the company is seeking tax abatements from Lafayette on $8 million for new equipment and $1 million for real estate improvements.
The Redevelopment Commission voted in favor of the request. It now goes to the city council.
A spokesperson for the company says warehouse operations will be consolidated and they will standardize the manufacturing process. This will allow the small and larger trailers to be built on one line.
While Wabash National will reduce the workforce from 2,174 people to 2,025. No lay-offs are expected, instead the cuts will be made through attrition.
Executives hope the changes over the next year will keep the company competitive during the tough economic times. © Copyright 2012, wbaa
