Superintendent candidates lay out goals
(2008-07-10)
(wbaa) - With current superintendent of public instruction Suellen Reed not seeking another term, this will be the first time in 16 years, Indiana has a new education chief.

Now, two longtime educators are vying for that job.

Republican Tony Bennett, the current superintendent at Greater Clark County Schools in southern Indiana, says making students globally competitive should be top of mind.

Democrat Richard Wood, a retired superintendent from Tippencanoe School Corporation near Lafayette, says his priority is reinforcing local control for schools.

Both Bennett and Wood support standardized testing.

Bennett is also emphasizing stronger school discipline for students while Wood wants all day kindergarten fully implemented across the state with no cost to parents.
