Tippecanoe Co. leaders continue mulling juvenile center
(2008-07-03)
(wbaa) - A vote on moving forward with a proposed juvenile justice center is expected at Monday's Tippecanoe County Commission meeting.

A meeting Wednesday night gave commissioners and council members more information about the cost of operating such a facility.

The tab for new staff and running the building for a year is estimated at $2 million. But the county expects to save more than that by not sending youth out of the area and taking in kids from other counties.

Lafayette Police Captain Kurt Wolf says the county needs a juvenile justice center to assess the youth picked up by police.

But some taxpayers expressed concerns with the cost of the facility when the state doesn't know the full effect of new property tax reforms.

Terry Masterson suggests the county leaders wait 90 days before making any decisions.

While commissioners may vote Monday, the county council is not expected to take up funding the proposal until July 15th.
