HUD stops Section 8 vouchers to Bridgeway Apartments
(2008-04-18)
LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
A troubled Lafayette apartment complex will no longer be eligible for Federal Section 8 housing status. The Department of Housing and Urban Development will stop vouchers to eligible residents of Bridgeway Apartments next month.
Mayor Tony Roswarski says the vouchers will remain in the area, for other rental units, so the city will be able to help Bridgeway residents find a new home.
He says the change in status of the troubled apartment complex is actually a win-win situation, because it will reduce crime in the area and improve the surrounding neighborhood.
Roswarski says no one should move out before they receive notice from the city and a relocation service about finding a new home using the vouchers pulled from Bridgeway.
Community Development Department Head Aimee Jacobsen says many services will be offered, including referrals to new apartments and legal resources, if necessary.
The Lafayette Housing Authority will screen residents and help them connect with other Section 8 renters in the area.
Deputy Police Chief David Payne says moving the residents out will not shift the criminal element to another part of the city. © Copyright 2012, wbaa
