Lafayette Sewer Bid
(2007-10-24)
(wbaa) - Lafayette officials are pleased with the low bid for a multi-million dollar downtown sewer project.

Earlier this year, the city only received one bid for the tunnel and it was TWICE the engineer's estimate.

City Engineer Jenny Bonner says this time around, six contractors are vying for the project, with the low bid coming in at 18-and-a-half-million dollars.

Bonner says that is still roughly two-million dollars MORE than what the city hoped to pay.

But she believes officials will be able to work with the low bidder to bring the cost even closer to the engineer's estimate.

Bonner says it could take up to two months for the city to agree on terms with a contractor.

The underground tunnel will be built from the Pearl River Lift Station near First and Chestnut Streets, run along Second Street, and come out at Riehle (really) Plaza.

It is designed to keep raw sewage from running into the Wabash River during heavy rainfall.
