Hershman: Tough Decisions Ahead on Property Taxes
(2007-09-04)
(wbaa) - Finding a solution to the state's property tax problem will be a challenge.

That's the assessment of Senator Brandt Hershman, who serves on the Commission on State Tax and Financing Policy.

The panel has been taking testimony from homeowners, assessors and tax experts this summer.

The Republican from Wheatfield says doing away with the property tax and raising the sales tax could hurt businesses, especially with big ticket items in border counties.

Hershman says another issue with relying on the sales tax is, revenue has been flat in recent years, due to an increase in buying online.

He thinks counties need to closely look at adopting a local option income tax.

The governor extended the deadline to do so, until the end of the year.
