Lafayette Sewer Project Moves Forward
(2007-08-01)
LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
Lafayette is paving the way to re-bid a multi-million dollar downtown sewer project. The city will pay railroad operator CSX 20-thousand dollars to run a tunnel under tracks adjacent to Second Street.
The tunnel will keep raw sewage from spilling into the Wabash River during heavy rain.
It will run along Second Street, from the Pearl River Lift Station to Riehle Plaza.
The city only received one bid for the project the first time around-- and it was more than TWICE the engineer's estimate.
Water Pollution Control Superintendent Brad Talley says the agreement with CSX should make it easier to attract more bidders.
Talley says the city must also reach an agreement with Norfolk Southern Railroad before re-bidding the tunnel project.
He hopes to have that in place in the next few weeks.
