In its 171-year history, Albany Medical College has never received such a large grant: 9-point-1 Million dollars from the National Institute of Health's "National Center for Research Resources" --- combined with 10% state matching funds, a total of ten million dollars will fund a major expansion of research at the college. James J. Barba, president and chief executive officer of Albany Medical Center, says the stimulus funds will be used to build two additional floors of laboratories and research facilities to a three-story building now under construction on New Scotland Avenue. 10 scientists and 10 technical staff members will be hired when the building is completed in about 2 1/2 years. Over 35 applications from 20 of the most prestigious institutions in New York State competed for the award.
