(WAMC) - NATIONAL ADDRESS TO AMERICA'S SCHOOCHILDREN:
REMARKS BY PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA -

All the political punditry is finally behind us. And our Teacher-in-Chief, President Barack Obama, has spoken to students from coast to coast. We've heard his stories before about going to school in Indonesia. His comments about growing up with a single parent likely rang true for many students listening. In this report, we focus on the important things the president said about students taking personal responsibility, staying in school, setting goals, doing homework and graduating.

"THE BRIDGE TO LITERACY: NO CHILD OR ADULT LEFT BEHIND"
HOW A TEACHER FINALLY LEARNED TO READ AT AGE 48 -

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Congress designated it two decades ago. And each October, the president issues a proclamation officially making this month National Disability Month.

Our next guest has what he describes as a learning disability. But despite that, was twice appointed to the Board of the National Institute for Literacy by two former presidents.

John Corcoran is a college graduate and teacher. But his first book, "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read", he confessed to the world that he was illiterate. How could that possible happen, being a trained teacher?

Now, in his compelling latest book, "The Bridge to Literacy: No Child or Adult Left Behind", Corcoran assesses the causes and consequences of the literacy crisis, offers proven solutions, and explains his vision of hope for the future of reading in this country. It's published by Kaplan.

John Corcoran continues to strive to bring illiteracy out of the shadows. His John Corcoran Foundation was created to promote literacy through John's advocacy efforts, through support of special literacy projects, and through the development of tutoring programs. The Foundation has now trained more than 300 tutors and tutored some 2,000 students. Corcoran talks with TBOOK about America's illiteracy subculture.
