HUDSON VALLEY, NY(WAMC) -
The landmark Shriver Report was released last week, a study by Maria Shriver and the Center for American Progress which concluded that for the first time, women make up fifty percent of the American workforce. That report points out that society hasn't kept up with that change, as the need for flexible scheduling, child care, health care benefits and pay equity are still lagging behind what's now being called A Women's Nation. Women's health advocates say another issue is a growing quiet crisis in access to safe, legal abortions. Federal numbers show the number of abortions performed in the US is down to a rate not seen since the 70s...but that may be because finding a legal abortion provider is becoming increasingly difficult, especially in the Midwest. Despite the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, the number of doctors qualified to perform the procedure is declining...and Hudson Valley bureau chief Susan Barnett reports women's health advocates say medical schools must start changing their policies.
