MONTPELIER, VT(WAMC) -
Vermont State Auditor Thomas Salmon asked all schools in Vermont to report all incidents of theft, fraud and embezzlement since 2000 following an incident of wire transfer fraud at the Washington South Supervisory Union last fall. Salmon says he is concerned about reporting requirements in general.
There is no requirement for school districts to report such incidents to the state Education Department, nor other state agencies. Auditor Salmon wants to change that.
Vermont Superintendents' Association Executive Director Jeff Francis notes that the state auditor has taken an interest in reviewing public agencies, most recently school districts.
Vermont NEA Spokesman Darren Allen says while any incident of fraud is disturbing, the Auditor's report needs to be put in proper perspective.
