Researchers say about half of Americans are at risk because they don't have enough "health literacy" skills. Dianne Cornelius is the director of the Western Michigan Health Education Center. She says low health literacy isn't about reading or writing but rather difficulty understanding complicated medical jargon and information.
Cornelius says if a patient doesn't understand instructions given by health professionals then they're not likely to have a good health outcome.
A conference focusing on the issue called Linking Literacy and Health is being held Thursday and Friday at Western Michigan University's Fetzer Center.
