National grid says it's raising the rates because of high natural gas prices. Spokesman Steve Brady says natural gas is the main fuel used to generate electricity.
"Nation Grid is not in the business of making electricty, so we are impacted by the high cost of that like other customers," Brady said.
National Grid customers in Western new York can expect to see a $5.50 increase starting in January. Statewide, the average increase will be $10.
Officials say another rate hike will take effect in April. Brady says monthly bills will increase about $3 starting April 1 to cover higher pension, health care and delivery costs.
