The White House said in a statement yesterday that President Bush intends to appoint Arden L- Bement Junior to head the foundation.
The N-S-F is an independent federal agency that supports research and education across all fields of science.
Bement would succeed N-F-S director and Purdue alumna Rita Colwell, who is retiring.
Bement is on leave from Purdue's School of Nuclear Engineering to serve as director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. That appointment that began in November 2001.
