The proposed reforms in the areas of the budget, tuition schedules, management and operations let SUNY and CUNY make decisions without having to cut through the layers of state bureaucracy that were put in place more than 40 years ago.
The proposed changes are something for which UB President John Simpson has been advocating for years. They include giving SUNY and CUNY the authority to make decisions on tuition regulation.
"I'm delighted the governor...is willing to change what is now decades-old policy that ought to be changed," Simpson told WNED News.
President Simpson calls the proposals common sense reforms that, he says, will create no additional costs for New York taxpayers, but will provide SUNY and CUNY
with the flexibility to make decisions.
Simpson says Governor Paterson's recommended reforms will help UB rise among the nation's top public research universities.
