New York's fiscal crisis is now expected to have to take an additional $10 million bite out of the anti-tobacco program to help balance the state budget. The Governor's Budget Office argues that the cuts will NOT affect New York's leadership in convincing smokers to quit. Paterson's budget spokesman Matt Anderson says funding for anti-smoking programs will remain over $50 million. Audrey Silk of New York City Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment, was not able to go on tape but argues that New Yorks' anti-smoking initiatives are a waste of taxpayer money, which she thinks would be better spent on transit, medicaid, education and could alleviate the pressure to raise other taxes. The Governor's Office says that this latest plan still needs to be approved by the Legislature.
