(WAMC) - P>Heroin use is on the rise in Albany County - the District Attorney partnered today with area health officials to issue a warning to schools, health care officials, counseling professionals and the general public, as we hear in this report from Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas.

We've been hearing more about Heroin in recent weeks: last month Albany County Sherriff's officers searched an Albany home where they found 113 glassine bags of heroin inside a Pringles potato chip can. Police found a quantity of heroin last Thursday night during a traffic stop along I-90. Most of us envision a heroin addict as a sweaty character, clad in an undershirt, with track marks up and down both arms.

St. Peter's Addiction Recovery Center is reporting a 75 per cent increase since 2007 in heroin use among patients seeking treatment at the facility. The increase is most dramatic in patients under the age of 30. This is the first time SPARC has issued an alert about Heroin. Officials say the modern version of the drug may be inhaled as a nasal spray, taken in tablet form or even distributed in the form of an adhesive "patch". The Albany County D-A's office says the drugs are widely available on the internet. Soares has vowed to aggressively prosecute "those who bring drugs into the community."
