Upper Hudson & Mohawk Valley Election Results
(2009-11-04)
(WAMC) -

Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings captured the lions share of votes in his bid for a 5th term. Jennings is on his way to becoming the city's second-longest tenured mayor, falling in line behind Erastus Corning who spent 41 years in office. The Democrat beat challengers Corey Ellis and Nathan Lebron.

The Bethlehem Town Supervisor's race is undecided, for now: 109 votes seperate incumbent Democrat Jack Cunningham from Conservative challenger Sam Messina. The Albany County Board of Elections sent out 468 absentee ballots for town voters - only 170 have been returned. The counting begins November 12th.

As the Town of Colonie fights its way back to fiscal solvency, Democratic Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan won reelection after a close contest with former Albany county executive Republican Mike Hoblock. It was Jerry Jennings, addressing the gathered party faithful, who broke the news to Mahan, who was momentarily overcome... later she said her victory two years ago was overwhelming, but reelection means even more, in the way of validating of her efforts to get the town back on track financially. In his concession speech, Hoblock told supporters he thanked Mahan for what he called a "spirited race."

In Saratoga county, Republican Phil Barrett wins another two years as Clifton Park town supervisor ... Republican Scott Johnson in a landslide re-election against Democrat Ron Kim, the public safety commissioner, for another two years as mayor. Republicans swept all contested City Council races, leaving Accounts Commissioner John Franck the sole Democrat. The GOP majority remains solid in the 19-member Rensselaer County Legislature. Schenectady Democrats scooped up votes as Republicans lost virtually all of the major races.

In Central New York, Republicans maintain control in Oneida County ... Democrats took most of the seats on Utica common council. The fight for one of those seats went literal when a poll worker stepped between Republican candidate Ed Hill and incumbent Democratic candidate Frank Vescera. That's when Hill allegedly punched Michael Colon in the face. Colon wasn't hurt but did tell the Utica Daily News that Hill "hits like a girl."

The Oneida County Board of Elections investigated why Nedzad Smajic, who was not supposed to be on the ballot received votes for that same council seat ... Oneida County Republican Election Commissioner Pam Mandryck attributed the erroneous tally to a computer error. If all of the votes attributed to Smajic go to Vescera, Vescera has won... Mandryck points out that nothing will be certified until next week.
