A Marist College poll finds 62 percent of New Yorkers say the Democratic president should keep out of next year's gubernatorial race.
Obama's spokesman has refused to confirm or deny the president sent a message to Paterson urging him to drop out of the 2010 campaign.
According to the survey, 51 percent of New York Democrats feel the White House was meddling where it didn't belong. Even if Paterson's candidacy for governor next year would hurt the party ticket, 60 percent of New York voters say Obama should not intervene.
While the numbers may appear to suuport the governor, the poll also found Paterson's approval rating at an all-time low. Just 17 percent of those surveyed say he is doing a good or excellent job.
Despite the controversy, Paterson says he intends to stay in office and will run in 2010.
