Agricultural Research Institute Plans Open House
(2009-06-26)
(WAMC) - An agricultural research institute in Northern New York is hosting an open house this weekend to celebrate its one-hundredth anniversary. North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley takes a look at the Miner Institute and it's work.

The William H. Miner Agricultural Institute in Chazy, NY works with farmers and professionals in agriculture delving into dairy and equine research. It began as the Heart's Delight Farm 100 years ago. William Miner had lived in Chicago in the late 1800s and was successful in the railroad industry. He moved back to his childhood home and began to enlarge the farm. Miner Institute President Rick Grant says Mr. Miner's vision was to create a model farm.

The Institute's research focuses on dairy and equine animals. It has a herd of 27 Morgan horses. They just started a new nutrition study comparing horses raised on a diet of low sugar or low starch hay, to horses that are pasture fed. Equine Manager Karen Lassell says the equine program fits the overall core mission of the Institute.

Miner Institute is holding an Open House on Saturday from Noon until 4 pm.
