Sen. Schumer Wants Temporary Government Loan Program for Small Businesses HENRIETTA, NY (WXXI) - US Senator Charles Schumer is calling on the Bush Administration to help small businesses get loans during the current economic crisis.

Schumer talked to reporters during a stop in Henrietta Tuesday morning. He's worried that the economic crisis will spread from Wall Street to Main Street. Schumer says the vast majority of jobs in this country are in the small business sector.

Schumer says 65 percent of domestic banks have tightened their lending standards for small businesses. He wants the administration to create a temporary direct loan program for businesses.

Schumer says some small businesses have started closing around the country. If that continues, he says it could send the US economy "down the drain." © Copyright 2010, WXXI
