It is estimated there are over 6.7 billion people on this planet. That's a huge number, and the problems that confront us are equally huge. Sometimes it just seems pointless to try to make a difference. But you don't have to be Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King or Ahn Sahng Soo Chi to accomplish small, and huge, things. First meet Jenenne Whitfield. She was minding her own business, successfully climbing the corporate ladder when she made an unexpected turn...and now she's putting her business smarts to work for the arts...and trying to bring a dying city back to life. I first discovered Detroit's Heidelberg Project when I heard this report.

I contacted Whitfield myself for an update...and to find out more.

Coming up on 51%..more women who just don't give up.

Too often we believe that you have to be some kind of expert, someone special to accomplish something amazing. This story is for you...Tricia Haggerty Wenz has accomplished something that combines urban renewal, affordable housing and social activism in Newburgh, New York. I'll let 51%'s Jim Horne take it from there.

5:31 Haggerty-Wenz - Horne

SafeHarbor is still growing...it's restoring a nearby abandoned theatre, is partnering with a performance venue and a local coffee shop...and some of the people who work there will be tenants of the Newburgh Hotel. You can find out more at www.safeharborsofthehudson.org

Not too far from Newburgh is a food pantry with a can-do attitude. Diane Reeder runs The Queens Galley in Kingston, NY...they serve three meals a day, seven days a week restaurant style...and despite constant money worries, they're serving thousands of people a month.

You can learn more at www.queensgalley.org.

As part of our National Science Foundation, The Sounds of Progress series, narrator Kate Mulgrew profiles Gertrude Elion. Her story is another that shows just how round about, the road to accomplishment can be.
