State Senate Approves Tax Cap Proposal
(2008-08-08)
(wned) - The State Senate has approved Governor David Paterson's proposal to cap local school and government property taxes.

In a special one-day session, the Republican led Senate passed legislation that would cap the growth of local taxes to 4% a year.

Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos praised Paterson, a democrat, for proposing the cap.

Skelos says lawmakers realize the need to control the growth of property taxes.

"It is incumbent upon us as representatives of the people who are crying out for help to recognize that something, in a bold way, has to be done to ease real property taxes," said Skelos.

While the measure passed the Senate with a 38-20 vote, the bill faces a long shot at becoming law because of resistance by the democratic-led Assembly.

Some democrats are accusing republicans of pandering.
