51% Show # 992
(2008-07-17)
(WAMC) - BILLBOARD - Susan Barnett(:55) (Music Out)
Lolita has shown up in film and television under many names...an immortal nymphet was even one of the main characters of Interview with the Vampire. Today she's all around us and she walks in daylight. Little girl's fashions are marketed as 'hot'. And hot is what young girls want to be. Dr. M. Gigi Durham has written a book called The Lolita Effect. In it, she looks at why girls are being sexualized at such a young age...and what we can do to help them deal with sexuality in an open, healthy way.

Dr. Gigi Durham's book, The Lolita Effect, is available through Overlook Press.

If Barbie and the media are responsible for the unrealistic expectations our society places on girls, how do you get them to see past the smoke and mirrors? If everyone else is doing it, how do we help girls choose to be different? 51%'s Jim Horne profiles a program that teaches girls to peel away the hype and be critical thinkers.

MUSIC OUT

Finally, it's the ArtSpace. Today we introduce you to a dancer with a difference. Aynsley Vandenbrouke, dancer, choreographer and founder of the Mount Tremper Arts in New York's Catskills...was told by her teachers that she thinks too much to be a dancer. She's rebelled against the rules that make dancers obedient robots with perfect technique. Her work combines thought with everyday motion.

Vandenbrouke 3:30

Aynsley Vandenbrouke is a dancer and head of the Aynsley Vandenbrouke Movement Group. You can find out more about her and Mount Tremper Arts, as well as the center's summer festival, at mttremperarts. com.
