Upton says Amtrak funding bill may mean high speed rail in Michigan
(2008-06-13)
(wmuk) - West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton says legislation that will fund Amtrak through 2013 will also provide grants for high speed rail. Upton says the area between Detroit and Chicago will be eligible for those grants. The bill passed the House easily. The White House had threatened a veto saying funding increases should be tied to reforms to Amtrak's operations. But both the House and Senate have approved the bill by more than the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto. Upton says funding Amtrak is crucial in the face of rising fuel prices. © Copyright 2009, wmuk
