On Sunday, March 3 at 4pm, virtuoso pianist Miguel Campinho will perform for the Joy of Music Concert Series held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 758 Main Street in Wilbraham. Having recently recorded an album of Portuguese piano music, Miguel will be sharing a program featuring the works of Portugeuse composer Eurico Tomás de Lima, among other favorite classical composers. There is a ten dollar suggested donation and refreshments will be served following the performance. Miguel Campinho, a native of Portugal, began music studies at the Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Braga, where he graduated in 1996. Then, in Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo do Porto, he completed both the Bacharelato and Licenciatura degrees in piano performance. He pursued studies at The Hartt School (University of Hartford), receiving guidance from Prof. Luiz de Moura Castro. He holds a Master of Music in piano performance and an Artist Diploma from this institution, where he was also awarded full scholarship and included in the roster of the 20/20 Honors Chamber Music Program. He is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at The Hartt School. He has also studied in the Hochschüle der Kunste, Berlin, Germany, with Prof. Laszlo Simon. He has played in masterclasses with renowned pianists and teachers, such as Helena Sá e Costa, Vitalij Margulis, Sequeira Costa, Dmitri Bashkirov, Martin Hughes, Klaus Hellwig, Jerome Lowenthal, Jörg Demus, and Michele Campanella.
Mr. Campinho is a prizewinner in several piano competitions in Portugal, such as the Maria Campina in Faro (1st prize in 2000, 2nd prize in 1999), the Prémio Juventude Musical Portuguesa in Lisbon (2nd prize, 1995) and the Prémio RDP Jovens Músicos (2nd prize, Chamber Music, 1996). In 2002 he won the Paranov Competition at The Hartt School. He took 3rd prize in the 2004 CSMTA Young Artists Competition, and Mention of Honor in the 2004 Ricard Viñes International Competition in Spain. He has performed in solo and chamber music appearances in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the U.S.A. He was soloist with the Orquestra Sinfonieta under Omri Hadari, the Orquestra do Norte under Ferreira Lobo, and the Hartt Symphony Orchestra under Christopher Zimmerman. He is a recipient of scholarships and awards from the following institutions: Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Instituto Politécnico do Porto, Erasmus/Socrates Project, University of Hartford, Musical Club of Hartford (Evelyn B. Storrs Scholarship).
Mr. Campinho has established himself as a passionate advocate for Portuguese piano music, having played the United States premieres of several compositions by Portuguese pianist-composer Eurico Tomás de Lima (1908-1989). He works as a vocal accompanist at The Hartt School, and maintains an active concert schedule. Miguel Campinho is a member of the American Liszt Society.
