Lewis first gained notoriety in the 1960's as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or SNCC. Later in March of 1965 - in what became known as Bloody Sunday - he and others were beaten and tear gassed by Alabama State Troopers as they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
