Today in Atlanta, U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey said federal and local law enforcement agents nationwide caught more violent fugitives in June than ever before. Georgia's effort was one of the most successful, catching 1200 in one week, alone.
Mukasey praised Operation FALCON 2008 as the most successful initiative in the program's 3-year history. Led by the U.S. Marshals Service, the effort targeted murderers, gang members and sex offenders.
Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington says the federal-local partnership helps his officers a lot:
PENNINGTON: Many of the criminals that commit their crimes in Altnata, move to other counties. And so my officers get a chance to work with the task force to locate these individuals that have committed very serious crimes in the city of Atlanta.
More than 1600 local and federal law enforcement agencies cooperated, in an effort to clear away some of the jurisdictional barriers that keep them from chasing offenders.
