Republican Heavyweights Crowd Field for Gubernatorial Primary
(2009-03-27)
(WABE) - Secretary of State Karen Handel today declared her intent to compete against Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine for the Republican nomination for Governor.

WABE's Odette Yousef spoke with several political analysts who say it's still much too early to declare a frontrunner.

Charles Bullock of the University of Georgia says Cagle has the advantage of the high profile nature of his current office, Handel might mobilize the female Republican vote in the primary, and Oxendine has held statewide office longer than anyone in the state.

BULLOCK: I think one of the things we can say at this point is, in all likelihood, two of these major players will go forward, and probably have to compete in a run-off election.

Bullock and Merle Black of Emory University agree the Republican side of this race is off to a noticeably early start.

BLACK: You have 3 statewide Republicans who are giving up their positions to give up their offices to run for the office of Governor. That tells you there's a lot of interest within the Republican Party.

Incumbent Sonny Perdue cannot run for re-election because of term limits.
