Election 2008
Early voter turnout high in metro Atlanta
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
On the second day of early voting in Georgia, registered voters have cast ballots by the hundreds and in some cases the thousands.
Local elections officials say that's just the tip of the iceberg.
By early afternoon, hundreds of registered voters in metro Atlanta had gone to their county registrar's office and cast their ballot.
As of 2:30, no county had seen a higher turnout than DeKalb. More than 1000 people had voted. Plus, the county elections office estimated there were up to 100 people in line.
The numbers reflect the surge in newly registered voters this year and the heightened interest in the Presidential race.
However, Fulton County Interim Elections chief April Pye says we haven't seen anything yet.
PYE: I expect that we'll see a much higher turnout during advanced voting because we have more sites. We have 7 sites and we will open until 7 pm.
Fulton will be just one of many counties to offer several different places to vote during advanced voting the week before Election Day. © Copyright 2009, WABE
