ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
(To listen to the audio version of this story, click "Listen: MP3" above.)
Troy Anthony Davis was convicted in the 1989 murder of Savannah police officer Mark Allen MacPhail. But since the trial, seven key witnesses have recanted their testimonies.
Many well known names from former President Jimmy Carter to Pope Benedict have asked the state not execute Davis.
Davis was scheduled to die in July of 2007 when similar calls prompted the Board of Pardons and Paroles to re-examine the case.
The board decided the evidence warranted the execution of Davis.
In his final hours, Davis will be allowed visitors. He will then eat his last meal. Unless the U.S. Supreme Court steps in, Georgia will execute Troy Anthony Davis tonight at 7 vial lethal injection.
