GA Labor Dept. moves to 4 day work week
(2008-09-19)
(WABE) - The head of the Georgia Department of Labor announced yesterday his agency will be moving to a 4 day work week.

The change in schedule comes as all state agencies deal with Georgia's budget crisis.

The decline in state revenue collections continues its vast effect on Georgia's government. For state workers, it means a 2-point-5 percent pay raise is off the table.

However, daily expenses like gas prices are still high. That's why state labor commissioner Michael Thurmond says his employees will begin working 4 days a week instead of 5.

THURMOND: "It's often over looked that government employees are paying the same price for gas as anyone else. So, we are going to help them save gas and this is important because they're not getting a 2 and a half percent increase."

Since they'll come to work one less day a week, Thurmond says labor employees will work 10 hour days. He sees that as an opportunity to extend hours for the department's career centers dedicated to helping the unemployed get back on their feet.

The new work week starts October 1st.
