Election 2008
Group alleges more training needed for GA poll workers
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
County election officials should better train their workers as they prepare for what's expected to be high voter turnout in November. That's the recommendation from a national voter advocacy coalition.
However, state officials blame the group for not telling them all the problems voters experienced this year.
During the Presidential primary in February, 72 percent of Georgia voters who called the group Election Protection complained about problems with poll workers including not knowing how to use Georgia's voting machines.
Barbara Arnwine is with Election Protection.
ARNWINE: "Georgia had more calls as a percentage of calling to the hotline than other states. It was disproportionately large."
The findings surprised Secretary of State Karen Handel. She says her office has had conversations with Election Protection since February. She says not once did the group mention any of these problems.
HANDEL: "It does no good because the only way we can address the problem is to know about it."
As for November's election, Handel says she hired a training director who has revamped the manual used by counties to prepare their poll workers. © Copyright 2009, WABE
