New Dunwoody Officials Prepare for Cityhood
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
Dunwoody residents yesterday selected their first mayor and nearly all of their six councilmembers. Those officials are now looking toward readying the city to stand alone by December first, in a tougher economic climate than anticipated.
Dunwoody residents recently learned that their city may find itself 2 million dollars short in its first year. When residents were mulling independence in July, advocates for cityhood claimed that all services could be provided at current or even enhanced levels without raising taxes.
Denis Shortal, elected councilmember from District One, says he still believes the city can still make it without raising taxes:
SHORTAL: We're going to be looking at needs, and not just necessarily wants, and there's a big difference there. Yes, the budget is going to be tight, but we are going to live within the constraints of that budget.
Over the next two-and-a-half months, the city will finalize who is on its council with a run-off for District two's seat. And, says Shortal, the part-time officials will select a city manager and police chief.
