State board grants hearing to Alderman
(2008-09-15)
(WABE) - Today, a judge ruled a Georgia death row inmate scheduled to die tomorrow night should not be put to death until he gets a clemency hearing with the state.

Because of Judge Melvin Westmoreland's order, the state board of pardons and paroles must give Alderman a clemency hearing.

Last week, the board said no because it felt it didn't need any more information.

That wasn't good enough for Alderman's legal team, which includes James Ringer.

RINGER: The board was acting unreasonably by not even being willing to hold a hearing and listen to the people who want to speak on his behalf.

In response to the judge's order, the board set a hearing for tomorrow morning. It will hear from Alderman's friends and family, religious leaders and a psychologist.

Then, the board will decide whether or not to commute Alderman's death sentence. The Georgia man was convicted of killing his wife in 1974. Alderman has denied any involvement in the killing.
