Group recommends school board fixes
(2008-09-11)
(WABE) - Problems with the Clayton County school board that eventually led to the county's loss of accreditation inspired a coalition to examine ways to improve all of Georgia's school boards.

Yesterday, the group made its recommendations to the state board of education.

The State Board of Education should be allowed to remove members of local school boards who are not performing up to certain standards. That's one of many recommendations from the Commission for School Board Excellence.

Mark Elgart is a commission member and head of the organization that stripped Clayton of its good standing. Elgart says there's a strong possibility Clayton County would still be accredited if the recommendations were already in place.

ELGART: I believe that if we had interventions that we could exercise prior to the loss of accreditation we would have had a much better chance to take the corrective action necessary.

The group also says all school board members should adhere to the same rules when it comes to conflict of interest and ethics.

The state board of education will take up the recommendations at its next meeting.
