Metro School Busses Roll Amid Controversy on Day One
(2009-08-10)
(WABE) - Students in Atlanta, Fulton, Decatur, DeKalb, Clayton, Cobb, Forsyth, Fayette and Gwinnett all hit the bus stops today, and the books.

For many teachers in those districts, it marks their first day back with pay.

Most educators burned off most of three state-mandated furlough days last week readying lesson plans and prepping classrooms before students arrived this morning.

For teachers, each day lost amounts to about $200-less in their pockets.

Not all districts furloughed--Cobb, DeKalb, Atlanta and Marietta city districts covered the pay within their budgets.

In Cobb County, it's not furloughs, but bus stops that have some upset. The district eliminated 11,000 stops to save money. Parents expressed outrage, saying students' safety was at stake.

The school board listened and later brought back about 2,500 of those stops.
