Gwinnett Schools Finalist for Best in Nation
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
The news came Thursday that the Broad Foundation selected Gwinnett as one of the top five districts.
Gwinnet schools Spokesman Jorge Quintana says the announcement came as a surprise.
"We did not apply for it. They found us."
The Broad Foundation each year looks for school systems that show high academic performance while bridging the academic gap between minorities and low-income students. Quintana says those goals are a cornerstone of the district's mission.
"Our board believes that every single child, no matter who that child is, can and will learn."
Gwinnett finds out in September whether it wins the top prize--a million dollars in scholarships for 2010 graduates. Just for being a finalist, it's guaranteed a quarter-million dollars.
This is the first time Gwinnett has been a contender. Atlanta Public Schools was a finalist in 2002. Jim Burress, WABE News
