Georgia Legislature
New Laws Take Effect July 1
(2010-07-01)
(WABE) - The Georgia Legislature recently passed several measures that went into effect July 1.WABE's Martha Dalton has more on some of the new laws.
Make sure you have spare change on hand if you plan to use the Georgia 400 toll plaza. Now drivers who don't pay will be hit with a 25 dollar "violation fee" instead of a ticket for the 50-cent fare.
Another new law strengthens ethics requirements for local school board members - and gives the state power to take over if a school system is in danger of losing its accreditation.
Also taking effect, in response to tough economic times, schools will be prohibited from using state taxes to give administrators raises if teachers are furloughed during the school year.
And there could be more transparency in government. The state government's Web site, open.georgia.gov, will be expanded so residents can track how their tax dollars are spent.
