New Transportation Funding Law Could Help Save, Transform MARTA: A Conversation with MARTA C.E.O. Dr. Beverly Scott
Wednesday, June 2nd, Governor Sonny Perdue signed a regional transportation funding bill, which addresses some of MARTA's money problems.
House Bill 277 frees the struggling transit agency from the requirement that it invest at least 50% of its sales tax revenue in infrastructure, instead of operations and maintenance. But there's still no direct state funding for MARTA.
In a conversation with WABE's Denis O'Hayer at the Capitol, MARTA C.E.O. Dr. Beverly Scott said the new law signals major changes for MARTA, and this region's mass transit, in the future. But, in the short term, she said it will help keep the agency afloat, with fewer service cuts than first planned.
