Healthcare Reform Advocates Call on Sen. Isakson to Support Single-Payer System
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
As the U.S. Senate debates whether to include a so-called "public option" in its version of a healthcare reform bill, some Georgians Thursday urged Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) to bypass that option in favor of something even more inclusive.
WABE's Jim Burress reports.
Outside of Sen. Isakson's metro Atlanta field office, about 20 members of "Healthcare Now Georgia," "MoveOn.org," and the "Grady Coalition" call for universal healthcare access, better known as the single-payer system.
To bolster that appeal, they bring dozens of letters and hundreds of signatures, all with the same message--"Healthcare is a Human Right."
Charity Woods is the state coordinator for MoveOn.org:
"What we need now is for Sen. Isakson to make a choice not to stand on the side of drug companies and insurance companies, but to support the strongest bill that he possibly can."
Isakson was unavailable for comment, but issued a statement saying he remains firm that the key to affordable healthcare reform involves stimulating competition in a private, market-based system.
