Emory to Participate in H1N1 Vaccine Trials
(2009-07-24)
(WABE) - To test the efficacy of a vaccine, Emory will seek both children and adults to roll up their sleeves and take a series of two shots. One will have a small amount of an inactive virus, the other a larger amount. Researchers hope to find out which works best.

One of the investigators, Dr. Henry Keyserling, says the study is safe because the virus is not living.

"You can't get any influenza disease from the study vaccine, and it's very similar to the standard vaccine that we've used for decades in the United States."

Keyserling says the trial will also test whether the vaccine can be administered along with the regular, seasonal flu vaccine or if they must be given separately.

The trial begins next month.
