City Council votes for Delta's new airport
(2009-11-16)
(WABE) - Delta Air Lines has a new agreement to lease space at Atlanta's airport.

Today, the Atlanta City Council unanimously approved the deal.

WABE's Charles Edwards reports

All 15 council members voted for the new lease. However, one of them, Ivory Young had some reservations.

YOUNG: "I just have to ask that Delta, as we, continue to stay true to the partnership and to be there for each other when the time comes."

Young wants to know that Delta will continue to support airport capitol improvement projects. Retiring council member Jim Maddox told Young the lease shows the airline will support the city.

MADDOX: "And it's a commitment on their part to have Atlanta as the headquarters for Delta Air Lines."

The new lease keeps Delta at the airport for the next 7 years. The international terminal should cost about 1.3 billion dollars. The lease calls for Atlanta to use bonds to cover most of the cost with Delta pitching in as well. Atlanta will also reimburse Delta for millions spent on terminal construction among other items.
