AirTran Adds Service Between Atlanta and Tunica, Mississippi
Known mostly for its casinos, the town of 1,100 is about 40 miles south of downtown Memphis, Tennessee.
AirTran spokesman Christopher White says the airline will be Tunica's only commercial operator.
"In fact, we'll be the first major carrier to offer service to Tunica," he said.
In 2006, a small regional airline operating under the name Pan Am Clipper Connection flew between Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Tunica, but it only lasted seven months.
Casino operators have since lobbied for an airline to provide scheduled service.
Although AirTran won't discuss specifics of the deal, casino operator Harrah's is listed as a "partner" of the airline.
