Impact of Japan Airlines' decision on business travelers
(2010-02-10)
(WABE) - Japan Airlines Tuesday said it will seek a joint venture with American Airlines instead of Atlanta based Delta.

There's disagreement over what the decision means for business travelers.

There are three major global alliances that fly to Asia. Delta is with SkyTeam. Japan is with One World and the third is called Star.

If Japan Airlines joins Delta's alliance, that would leave only 2 alliances with Asian networks. And business travel writer Joe Brancatelli says that would have been bad for passengers.

BRANCATELLI: "Well, the problem always is for business travelers is we want more choice among airlines individually and airlines in groups of alliances because that forces them to moderate prices and hopefully improve service."

However, Delta argued its proposal was good for business travelers. The company claims the partnership would mean more Asian flights out of Atlanta and easier access to Asian destinations other than Toyko.

Without Japan Airlines, Delta will still fly to Asia. Northwest, which merged with Delta, has had a strong Asian route network.
