AirTran Opening Hub in Milwaukee
(2009-12-30)
(WABE) - AirTran Airways has scaled back flights into and out of Atlanta this year. Still, it's second only to Delta in terms of passenger volume here. Now, the discount airline is shifting part of its focus to the North, opening a second hub in Milwaukee.

WABE's Jim Burress reports.

The Milwaukee market is a crowded one, serviced by major carriers and discounters Southwest and Midwest Airlines.

AirTran spokesman Christopher White says despite the competition, Wisconsin's largest city is still a good market one that offers the airline increased efficiency:

"It's a good place to have a second hub. It really connects the Northeast and West really well, rather than coming all the way South to Atlanta."

Milwaukee initially will serve as base for 50 AirTran pilots and at least 50 flight attendants.

About 50 flights, or 11% of the airline's network, will flow through Milwaukee.

More than half of AirTran's daily flights pass through Atlanta, its biggest hub.
