Education jobs are recession's bright stop
(2009-08-22)
(WABE) - With Georgia's unemployment rate still rising, the private sector is losing more jobs than government employers.

That's according to a new national study which includes a look at Georgia.

If you compare April to June of this year to the same 3 months last year, job losses in the private sector in Georgia are down 6 percent. But government employment is only down half of a percent.

The Rockefeller Institute of Government crunched the data. Institute senior fellow Donald Boyd says government employers have lost fewer jobs primarily because of education.

BOYD: "A recession does not generally lead to fewer students in schools. So, local governments are faced with continued pressure to retain employees."

Since last year, Georgia has about four thousand more education jobs running kindergarten up to colleges and universities.

But, many teachers face furloughs.

The Rockefeller report came out Thursday the same day Georgia reported its unemployment rate slightly increased in July to 10 point 3 percent.
