Borders Emotional About Losing Mayor's Race, Not Sure on Runoff Endorsement
(2009-11-04)
(WABE) - As her two top rivals closed in on a run-off, mayoral candidate Lisa Borders effectively conceded the race at 11pm Tuesday. Borders, considered a favorite early on, steadily lost ground after briefly pulling out of the race, while rival Kasim Reed gained support. WABE's Odette Yousef reports.

It was an emotional moment for Borders as she stood before the hundreds of supporters who came to the W Hotel Downtown:

BORDERS: I want to thank all of you tonight for being here with me to celebrate that city we love.

Eighty-two percent of the precincts were reporting at that time, and Borders's numbers had stubbornly stuck at 13% of the votes as the results continued to roll in. Borders said she had made the decision to concede just 10 to 15 minutes before taking the stage.

BORDERS: We did the math - something that we've talked about the entire campaign and we saw we did not have the ability to close the gap, so we want to honor the decision that the voters made and let the process move forward.

Borders said it's too early to announce whether she will be endorsing either of the two candidates in the run-off.
